چکیده
Background: Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae still ranks high in the etiology of diarrhoeal diseases in several parts of India. Aim:To study the characteristics and anti-microbial resistance pattern of the Vibrio choleraestrains isolated in our hospital. Methods: Over a 2 year period, stool samples from clinically suspected cholera cases were screened and the isolates were identified by standard laboratory techniques. Vibrio cholerae isolates were confirmed by slide agglutination using antisera andanti-microbial susceptibility was carried out by Kirby Bauer's disc diffusion method. Results: Of the 51 samples, 21 strains of Vibrio cholerae were isolated, all of which were identified as Vibrio cholerae bio type El Tor. Majority(85.71%) of the isolates were serotype Ogawa. Both sexes were equally affected with maximum number of cases seen in the age group 0 – 20 years. Resistance to ampicillin was seen in 61.9%, to tetracyclinein 38.1% and to ciprofloxacin in 23.8% of the isolates. None of the isolates were resistant to gentamicin and cephotaxime. Conclusion: Our present situation regarding drug resistance in Vibrio cholerae is a matter of concern. Therefore, the anti-microbial profile of Vibrio cholerae isolates should be under constant surveillance.

Epidemiology & antibiograms of Vibrio cholerae isolates from a tertiary care hospital in Chandigarh, north India.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Cholera is endemic in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas. This retrospective study was undertaken over a period of nine years (January 1999-December 2007) from a tertiary care hospital in north India to understand the changing epidemiology aspects and antibiotic resistance patterns in Vibrio cholerae isolates. METHODS A total of 277 isolates of V. cholerae were includ...

متن کاملSXT constin among Vibrio cholerae isolates from a tertiary care hospital
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The SXT element, also known as 'constin' (conjugable, self transmissible, integrating element) is an integrating conjugative element (ICE) in Vibrio cholerae discovered in the chromosome of epidemic V. cholerae O139 strain MO10 (SXT MO10 ) which arose in late 1992 in Chennai, India. SXT related ICEs have become widespread and currently, most if not all Asian V. cholerae ...

Forty-four Vibrio cholerae isolates collected over a 7-month period in Chennai, India in 2004 were characterized for gene traits, antimicrobial susceptibility and genomic fingerprints. All 44 isolates were identified as O1 El Tor Ogawa, positive for various toxigenic and pathogenic genes viz. ace, ctxB, hlyA, ompU, ompW, rfbO1, rtx, tcpA, toxR and zot. Nucleotide sequencing revealed the presenc...

BACKGROUND Increase in the number of multidrug resistant pathogens and the accompanied rise in case fatality rates has hampered the treatment of many infectious diseases including cholera. Unraveling the mechanisms responsible for multidrug resistance in the clinical isolates of Vibrio cholerae would help in understanding evolution of these pathogenic bacteria and their epidemic potential. This...
